Based in the heart of London’s theatre land, Bungatini is an authentic Italian pizzeria which lies above its very own basement bar, Bunga Bunga. iFour were chosen to complete the design work by a firm they had previously worked with, Inception Group, an innovative company who own a number of high-end bars and restaurants in London. Opened as sister restaurants, Bungatini and Bunga Bunga on Drury Lane follow the opening of the first Bunga Bunga which opened in Battersea in 2011. The Covent Garden all-day bar and restaurants which are split across two floors, have been designed to reflect the ‘Englishman’s Italian’ and created to operate completely differently to the normal industry.
The Bungatini pizzeria and bar serves authentic dishes including a wide selection of pizzas to classic, regional dishes, with a bespoke bar as the centrepiece as well as the mezzanine, designed to transport you to a Tuscan countryside.
The project began in 2016 and was completed in two stages, with the first phase being the completion and opening of Bungatini in September of that year. The team also had to complete part of the basement build, including the back of house kitchen, preparation area, dish and glass washing facilities, as well as the bulk of the storage areas, including a walk in cold room. “This all had to be completed while the major part of the build in the basement areas were ongoing” said Lee. General manager at Bungatini, Matt Richardson, believes that iFour were the perfect design team to take on the task of implementing Bungatini’s signature style.
He said: “Being the business we are, we wanted to do everything completely different, working with iFour allowed us to do that – we’d give them an idea and they’d make it a reality” Andrea Pesenti, Bungatini’s head chef, noted that he needed a kitchen and pass where the staff could produce 100 to 150 pizzas, plus smaller Italian dishes every day. “Whatever kitchen or bar design you need, iFour is the perfect company, they give you the best help and will find out your personal touch and create a bespoke design, whether it’s an Italian, English or Lebanese kitchen” said Andrea. Matt added: “They took into account every single need we had and exactly how we wanted to operate our business. Everything was exactly how we expected, the delivery was smooth and we had no issues at all.”
